FAQs

Which type of therapist should I see?

I understand that seeking support can be overwhelming, especially with the multitude of therapists and counsellors offering different types of talking therapies. You may even wonder why amongst the many therapists and counsellors, there is such a variance in the price of talking therapy.

It is important to know that many titles used in this field are unprotected and unregulated, which means anyone can use them regardless of their level of training or qualification. Titles such as Counsellor, Therapist, Psychotherapist, and CBT therapist do not provide specific information about the therapist's training or qualifications.

Even the title "Psychologist" alone is unregulated and unprotected. Someone using this title may have basic education in psychology but might not possess the professional qualifications necessary to offer high-quality psychotherapy.

Therefore, when seeking support from a mental health professional, it is essential to inquire about their specific training and whether they are affiliated with a professional organisation or body.

When seeking a Psychologist, it is crucial to look for the titles "Clinical Psychologist" or "Counselling Psychologist" as they are protected and regulated by the professional body known as the HCPC. These titles are legally protected, and individuals using them without proper qualifications can face prosecution by the HCPC. To use the titles Clinical Psychologist or Counselling Psychologist, one must hold a doctorate in Clinical or Counselling Psychology and continually engage in post-qualification training to stay up-to-date with the latest developments in the field.

Therefore, choosing a therapist with the titles Clinical Psychologist or Counselling Psychologist ensures that they are qualified professionals with the necessary training, experience, and skills to provide effective therapy, and are regulated in doing so.

Where do your sessions take place?

Face-to-face sessions take place in a wellness centre in Nether Edge, Sheffield. I am also able to offer online sessions if you prefer or if you do not live locally.

When do you offer appointments?

Subject to availability, I currently offer evening or weekend appointments.

How do I book an appointment?

The first step is to get in touch via the contact page on this website with a brief summary of the difficulties you are experiencing and why you would like to access therapy.

If I feel I may be a good fit for the difficulties you describe, I will send you a copy of my terms and conditions to read and sign. We can then look to securing an assessment appointment. In order to secure this appointment, it is necessary for me to receive a signed copy of the terms and conditions as well as full payment at least 48 hours before the agreed appointment time. Without both of these, appointments cannot be secured.

What does an assessment appointment entail?

The assessment is an important step to determine if we are a good fit for working together. It allows us to understand why you have sought therapy and decide if we can form an agreement to work together. The assessment aims to ensure that we have a solid foundation for therapy and can address your unique needs effectively.

Please keep in mind that there may be instances where I am unable to provide therapy or feel that your needs would be better served by a clinician with more specialised skills in the specific issue you are facing. It is important to note that both of us have the right to decide not to continue with the therapy process after the assessment. In such cases, I will discuss this with you and offer recommendations or alternative options whenever possible.

If your needs require a specialised approach that I do not offer, I will usually inform you before scheduling the assessment. It is your responsibility to inform me of any specific requirements or considerations before booking the assessment.

What does a THERAPY APPOINTMENT ENTAIL?

Therapy sessions are tailored to your unique needs and progress and will vary depending on which therapeutic approach we choose to take together. Typically, in therapy sessions, my goal is to provide a warm and supportive space where you can openly express your thoughts and feelings. We'll engage in meaningful conversations and work collaboratively to explore the challenges you're facing. Together, we'll aim to identify patterns, gain insights, and develop strategies to help you overcome obstacles and achieve your goals. This may also involve practicing new skills and ways of coping between sessions.

how long is each session?

The assessment session lasts approximately 90 minutes to ensure we have enough time to explore your difficulties and so that you do not feel rushed in doing so. If we agree to proceed to therapy sessions after your assessment, therapy sessions last approximately 50 minutes.

How often do I need to attend?

Sessions are typically scheduled on a weekly or fortnightly basis. However, I understand that not everyone has the availability or financial resources to commit to weekly sessions, and I am therefore open to discussing different timeframes that work best for you. Please let me know how often you would like to have your sessions, and we can find a schedule that suits your needs.

How many sessions of support will I need?

This will vary depending on your needs and circumstances. Typically, we will agree a set number of sessions initially, after which point we will review to discuss whether you feel you need any further sessions.

What if I need to cancel a session?

Upon booking an appointment, you will receive a confirmation email. If you need to cancel or reschedule the appointment, please contact me using the email address provided in the confirmation.

I kindly ask that you provide a minimum of 48 hours notice (equivalent to 2 full working days) if you need to cancel an agreed appointment. If you cancel with less than 48 hours notice, the payment cannot be refunded, as it would be too late to offer the appointment to someone else.

If you intend to use an insurance provider to cover the session costs, please check with your insurer regarding their coverage for cancellations. If cancellations are not covered, you will be responsible for the cost of any missed appointments. There is more information regarding cancellations in my full terms and conditions, which I would send to you prior to us agreeing to work together.

Can I stop therapy at any time?

Throughout our time together, please remember that you are under no obligation to continue with therapy if you feel it is not the right fit for you. Your comfort and well-being are of utmost importance. If at any point you wish to end our sessions, I kindly request that we have a discussion about it. This allows us to ensure a safe and appropriate ending, taking into consideration your needs and any necessary closure. Your input and feedback are valuable, and I am here to support you in making the best decisions for your journey.

Will everything be kept private and confidential?

I am registered with the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO), which ensures that I handle personal information in a secure and confidential manner. For further details, please visit the ICO's website. Additionally, I have professional insurance coverage and possess a clear DBS certificate, demonstrating my commitment to maintaining a safe and trustworthy practice.

During our therapy sessions, I prioritise confidentiality and adhere to ethical guidelines set by my professional organisations. This means that whatever we discuss remains strictly between us.

However, there are certain circumstances where I have a legal and professional responsibility to ensure safety. For example, If I have genuine concerns about your well-being or the safety of others, including children or vulnerable adults, I may need to breach confidentiality to take appropriate action. In such cases, I would aim to discuss this with you first before involving external agencies, providing it is safe to do so.

How do insurance funded sessions work?

I am registered as a clinical practitioner with several healthcare providers including Aviva, Axa and Bupa. Every healthcare plan and each provider have different rules and regulations for engaging with therapy. As the insurance policy holder, it is your responsibility to check with your insurer to confirm how much will be covered by them. I ask that you provide an authorisation code and membership details prior to your initial appointment.
